Reading Apprenticeship at American River College

American River College LogoTo kick off Spring 2016, American River College(ARC) and 3CSN recently co-sponsored a ½ day Reading Apprenticeship workshop. Reading Apprenticeship leaders and practitioners from six different disciplines at ARC facilitated this workshop for community college educators from the Sacramento area.  After an overview of the Reading Apprenticeship framework, each instructor guided participants through a discipline-specific lesson using one or more Reading Apprenticeship routines; these lessons included reading a passage in German, solving a Physics problem, exploring new words, and more.

Sharing Reading Apprenticeship stories

Throughout the workshop, participants had the opportunity to practice Reading Apprenticeship routines and discuss how they might apply these routines in their respective classes.  The modeling and practice reinforced reading as a problem-solving process and showcased how metacognitive strategies help readers participate in conversations as they build meaning from texts.

Participants commented on their experiences, emphasizing that the presentations were engaging and helpful.

“Great presentations that gave both good

             background and practical information”

“The examples were very helpful.”
