To kick off Spring 2016, American River College(ARC) and 3CSN recently co-sponsored a ½ day Reading Apprenticeship workshop. Reading Apprenticeship leaders and practitioners from six different disciplines at ARC facilitated this workshop for community college educators from the Sacramento area. After an overview of the Reading Apprenticeship framework, each instructor guided participants through a discipline-specific lesson using one or more Reading Apprenticeship routines; these lessons included reading a passage in German, solving a Physics problem, exploring new words, and more.
Throughout the workshop, participants had the opportunity to practice Reading Apprenticeship routines and discuss how they might apply these routines in their respective classes. The modeling and practice reinforced reading as a problem-solving process and showcased how metacognitive strategies help readers participate in conversations as they build meaning from texts.
Participants commented on their experiences, emphasizing that the presentations were engaging and helpful.
“Great presentations that gave both good
background and practical information”
“The examples were very helpful.”
Between the presenters and the participants, the following disciplines were well-represented: Biology, ESL, Reading, English, History, Psychology, German, Art History, Math, Library Science, Human Development, and Counseling.
Thank you to Susan Ramones, Chris Padgett, Amanda Corcoran, Susannah Martin, Jennifer Laflam, and Andrea Garvey for putting together this lively and engaging workshop.
3CSN continues to offer Reading Apprenticeship and Reading Apprenticeship in STEM professional learning workshops statewide. On February 19, 3CSN and College of San Mateo are co-hosting a workshop titled “Deeper Metacognitive Learning in STEM: Reading Apprenticeship” for STEM instructors. The following week on February 26, 3CSN and San Jose City College are co-hosting an Introductory to Reading Apprenticeship workshop. Both registration links are available via the 3CSN calendar of events on this page.
